Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin chaired a high-level review meeting today, 19 May, at the Secretariat to assess the state’s preparedness ahead of the Southwest Monsoon and to finalise arrangements for the timely release of water from the Mettur Dam on 12 June.
The meeting was convened to ensure proactive flood management, protection of human lives, and smooth implementation of agricultural water supply measures. Departments were instructed to complete all monsoon-related precautionary work, with a particular focus on the delta region that depends on timely irrigation for the kuruvai paddy season.
The Chief Minister directed that desilting works in canals and water bodies be completed expeditiously. He asked officials to identify and monitor flood-prone zones, prepare relief centres, and ensure proper functioning of stormwater drains and drainage systems in urban and rural areas.
He stressed the need for coordinated action between the Water Resources, Revenue, Public Works, and Municipal Administration departments, urging them to remain on high alert and ready with contingency plans. Emergency services, including the Fire and Rescue Services, TNDRF, and NDRF units, were asked to be fully mobilised.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to Tamil Nadu’s farmers, the chief minister announced that water from the Mettur Dam would be released as scheduled on 12 June 2025. This date, traditionally aligned with the kuruvai crop calendar in the Cauvery Delta, is considered critical for ensuring a successful agricultural season.
He directed the Water Resources Department to maintain optimal reservoir levels and ensure equitable water distribution to benefit farmers in the Delta region.
