Tamil Nadu BJP IT wing president CTR Nirmal Kumar stoked a controversy on Sunday, 18 September, over a tweet on Rahul Gandhi, which was widely deemed insensitive.

He shared an old image of the Congress leader touching the palms of his niece Miraya Vadra.

The caption, loosely translated from Tamil, said, “I feel pity for the 10 members who go on a yatra with Pappu, who plays with kids applying Mehendi.”

Kumar deleted the tweet after facing backlash. He later told South First that the tweet had political motives.

Kumar, in another tweet, said his intention was never to bring anybody’s personal life into public, and people misunderstood his original Tamil tweet.

He also said in the fresh tweet that he stood by the contents of the now-deleted post as it was a purely political comment, and there was nothing wrong with it.

“The Bharat Jodo Yatra led by Rahul Gandhi is not assuming any significance, and he cannot become an Opposition leader in the nation,” Kumar later said.

“We have been charging against the Congress, and my tweet was in line with it. It was on political motives, and I didn’t try to defame him. My tweet didn’t have a word of flirting, and people misunderstood it,” he added.

When asked how the image in his deleted tweet justified his stand, Kumar said Rahul was playing with kids on his yatra, and he clicked photos with them.

“…[W]hich was why I posted [it], thinking, how would he become an opponent if he always plays with kids?” he asked.

Severe criticism

The original tweet drew severe criticism and flak from the public and Congress leaders.
