BJP safe for women

Actor and BJP national executive member Khushbu Sundar said on Sunday, 8 January, that women are safe in the Tamil Nadu unit of the saffron party.

She made the statement with reference to another actor — Gayathri Raguramm — who quit the party claiming that it was not safe for women.

Replying to a question, Khushbu told reporters in Coimbatore that all women had not left the party. “Even I am in the party,” she quipped.

Gayathri Raguramm, who was suspended from the BJP in November last year, announced on 3 January that she is resigning from the party and claimed that women are not safe in the Tamil Nadu unit as “nobody cares about true karyakartas”.

She blamed the state BJP chief K Annamalai for her decision to quit the party.

One of the main reasons behind Gayathri’s decision was the alleged personal attacks she had been facing, purportedly from Annamalai and his supporters — both offline and online.

From claiming that Annamalai spoke ill about her in front of 150 people at a hotel to accusing his supporters of running a “war room” to target leaders like her, the actor-politician stated that she was being constantly trolled and attacked.

Another reason for her resignation appeared to be a lack of inquiry into her suspension.

However, Annamalai said he had no regret about those leaving the organisation, and wished such persons well.

Meanwhile, Khushbu claimed that some people in the DMK worked against her and the BJP stood in support of her. Annamalai fought in favour of her as he is bold and takes strong decisions, she said.

The actor, who was in Coimbatore to flag off a “rekla” race (ox-cart race) organised by the party in Vellalore, said that Pongal was the traditional festival of Tamil Nadu and brought happiness in all houses.

However, the Pongal gift offered by the DMK government in the state was a shame, and the sugarcane and ₹1,000 were given like alms, she alleged.

On the usage of the word “Thamizhagam”, Khushbu said, “It is not wrong to call the state Tamizhagam or Tamil Nadu. Though I was born in Mumbai, I am a Tamil woman living here for the last 36 years.”

Earlier, she prepared Pongal and travelled on a “rekla” for some distance.
