In yet another suspected case of dishonour killing in Tamil Nadu, a man was hacked to death by the relatives of his wife in Pallikaranai in Chennai on the night of Saturday, 24 February.
The man, identified as Praveen (25), had married Sharmi, who belongs to another caste, four months ago against the will of her family, according to reports.
Praveen is said to be from the Adi Dravidar community, which is a Scheduled Caste. Sharmi is reportedly from the Yadava caste, which comes under OBC.
Five men, including the girl’s brother, were arrested on Sunday near Nungambakkam. The Pallikaranai police are probing the incident.
The accused have reportedly been identified as Stefen Kumar, Jothi Lingam, Sriram, Ashok, Vishnu Raj, and Dinesh.
On Saturday night, Sharmi’s elder brother Dinesh and three others rounded up Praveen outside a bar in Pallikaranai and allegedly hacked him to death.
Another possible angle to this case, the police said, could be that Praveen was allegedly involved in a murder in 2022 and one of his attackers on Saturday night wanted to take revenge for the 2022 murder, reported The New Indian Express.
After the attack, Praveen was rushed to the Chrompet Government Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Praveen’s father Gopi was quoted by India Today as saying, “He went out to buy food and when he did not return after two hours, I started to get worried.”
He added: “Only when my daughter-in-law began to cry did I realise that something was wrong.”
Gopi also said: “I want all of them punished. I want the government to do something for my daughter-in-law.”
