Tragedy at TVK event in Karur: At least 38 killed in stampede at actor Vijay’s rally

The incident occurred as Vijay was addressing the gathering. The crowd rushed forward to the dais, resulting in the tragedy. Vijay halted his speech following the incident, and asked the police to help.

Synopsis: Following the incident, Chief Minister MK Stalin deputed Ministers Ma. Subramanian and Anbil Mahesh to Karur, along with Additional DGP (Law and Order) Davidson Devasirvatham and others. DMK MLA V Senthil Balaji and AIADMK’s MR Vijaya Bhaskar, too, have reached the hospital.

At least 38 people, including 10 children and 18 women, were killed and several others injured in a stampede-like situation at a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) meeting attended by the party chief, actor-politician Vijay, in Tamil Nadu’s Karur on Saturday, 27 September.

The conditions of 40 others undergoing treatment is stated to be stable.

The incident occurred even as Vijay was addressing the gathering. He had to stop his brief speech multiple times, as the crowd surged forward to gave a better glimpse of the actor-politician.

Following the incident, Chief Minister MK Stalin deputed Ministers Ma. Subramanian and Anbil Mahesh to Karur, along with Additional DGP (Law and Order) Davidson Devasirvatham and others. DMK MLA V Senthil Balaji and AIADMK’s MR Vijaya Bhaskar, too, have reached the Government Hospital, Karur.

The state government has mobilised additional 24 doctors from Tiruchi and 20 from Salem.

Minister Subramanian said many people were brought dead to the hospital.

Vijay hurries back to Chennai

Following the tragedy, Vijay rushed to the Trichy airport on his way back to Chennai. He did not respond to the media.

Later, he expressed sorrow over the loss of lives.

“My heart is shattered; I am in unbearable grief and sorrow that cannot be expressed in words,” he said in a post on X in Tamil.

“I extend my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur. I pray for the speedy recovery of those receiving treatment in the hospital,” he added.

TN announces compensation of ₹10 lakh

Later on Saturday, the Tamil Government announced that it would set up a commission under Justice Arun Jagadeeshan to probe the incident. The government also announced an ex gratia of ₹10 lakh each to the bereaved families.

Earlier , Chief Minister MK Stalin had said that he was receiving worrying news from Karur.

“The news coming from Karur is worrying. I have asked for immediate medical treatment to the public who were admitted to hospital after they fainted due to the stampede,” Stalin said in a post on X in Tamil.

He will visit Karur on Sunday, 28 September, to take stock of the situation.

The turnout at the meeting was unprecedented. Many people swooned, and children went missing.

The event was part of TVK’s public outreach programme, held every Saturday. Vijay had addressed a meeting at Namakkal in the morning, before reaching Karur. Overcrowding has been a constant concern at TVK chief Vijay’s public rallies owing to his huge fan following. Similar scenes of overcrowding were witnessed at TVK’s rally in Madurai earlier.
