In the early hours of Sunday, 29 June, the Sri Lankan Navy arrested eight Indian fishermen from Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu and seized their mechanised boat.
The fishermen were accused of crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line and poaching in Sri Lankan waters near Dhanushkodi and Talaimannar. According to local sources, the fishermen were taken to the naval port in Talaimannar for further action. The arrest sparked concern among coastal communities in Rameswaram and surrounding areas.
A resident pointed out that the fishermen had ventured into the sea just four times in the past 12 days, and said the arrest seemed to be based on false charges.
Community leaders have demanded firm action from the Indian government. JR Jesu Raja, a representative from the fishermen’s association, urged the Union government to take up the matter with the Sri Lankan government and find a lasting solution.
