Synopsis: With the help of local residents, Rahul and Chitharanjan were apprehended and handed over to the police. Police said both sustained injuries during the incident and were taken to Government Stanley Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Manoj reportedly fled from the spot and police are searching for him.

A six-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted in the Tiruvottiyur area of North Chennai, triggering a police investigation.

According to the information available, the child, whose family is from Bihar and lives in the area, was taken to a private hospital near Theradi by her parents after she developed severe bleeding. Doctors who examined her reportedly informed the family that she had been sexually assaulted.

While the child’s family has alleged that three men who were staying in the room were involved in the incident, according to police sources, the incident does not appear to be a gang assault.

Police sources said that, based on the preliminary investigation, one person is believed to have been directly involved in the sexual assault. However, police are continuing to investigate the allegations and establish the exact sequence of events.

The incident reportedly took place last Sunday, but came to public attention on Tuesday, 6 October.

Two held, one absconding

At the hospital, as the child’s parents reportedly faced a language barrier, another person, who was at the hospital accompanying a relative for treatment, learned about the incident and helped communicate with the family.

The person and his family subsequently spoke to the child, who allegedly identified three men known as Rahul, Chitharanjan and Manoj, reportedly from Bihar, as those responsible.

With the help of local residents, Rahul and Chitharanjan were apprehended and handed over to the police. Police said both sustained injuries during the incident and were taken to Government Stanley Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Manoj reportedly fled from the spot and police are searching for him.

The investigation

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Preliminary inquiries reportedly indicate that the child’s parents, who sell pani puri, had left the house in the evening when the three men allegedly took the child to the upper floor and sexually assaulted her.

Police are also investigating whether anyone else was involved. According to the person at the hospital who helped cross the language barrier, the child identified the three men.

The house where the accused allegedly stayed reportedly accommodated around 10 people, and police found that one of the occupants did not have identification documents. Police are also examining whether the house owner had collected and verified the identification documents of the migrant workers staying there.

The incident has caused concern among residents in the area. Police are continuing their investigation and efforts are underway to trace the absconding accused.

Anbumani Ramadoss, president of PMK expressing shock over the incident, demanded that the government and the police must ensure that the perpetrators do not escape justice.

Demanding death penalty for the accused, he added, “The Tamil Nadu Government and the police must arrest the third person as well, bring all the accused to justice and take all necessary steps to secure the maximum punishment, including the death penalty, for this heinous crime. The Tamil Nadu Police must ensure that no woman or child is subjected to sexual violence anywhere in the State.”
