At least six people, including a three-year-old child, were killed and several others injured in a fire that broke out in a private hospital on Dindigul-Trichy national highway around 9.30 pm on Thursday, 12 December.
The blaze, sparked by a suspected electrical short-circuit, spread rapidly, engulfing the four-storey building of the City Ortho Hospital. The district authorities said all patients have been evacuated.
Emergency services, including Dindigul Fire and Rescue personnel and over 50 ambulances were deployed immediately to rescue and transfer patients to the Dindigul Government Medical College Hospital and nearby facilities.
Two fire engines were initially used to control the blaze. Reports said six individuals were trapped in an elevator.
“All patients have been taken out, and the fire is being controlled,” District Collector MN Poongodi told reporters. “Unfortunately, six people have lost their lives. Doctors are yet to provide a complete confirmation of the injured and dead,” she added.
Officials, including RDO Sakthivel and Deputy Mayor Rajappa were coordinating the rescue operations. Several patients have sustained serious injuries, some in critical condition. Authorities fear the death toll could rise as the situation unfolds.
An investigation into the fire’s cause has been initiated, with preliminary findings pointing to an electrical short-circuit.
