The alleged sexual assault sparked widespread protests in Tamil Nadu.

The 23 December sexual assault of a student at Anna University has sparked widespread protests across Tamil Nadu, with AIADMK, BJP and other political parties demanding justice for the survivor and accountability from the DMK-led government.

The incident has brought campus safety and governance under intense scrutiny.

AIADMK protests and arrests

AIADMK members, led by former Minister D Jayakumar, organised a protest near Anna University, criticising the DMK government for its alleged failure to ensure safety on campuses.

The protest escalated into a road blockade, leading to the arrest of Jayakumar and other party leaders, including former MP J Jayavardhan and several district secretaries.

Jayakumar, speaking to reporters after his detention, said, “The DMK government allows protests by Congress, VCK, and Communist parties in the same area, but denies permission for AIADMK’s demonstrations. Strong action must be taken against the accused, Gnanasekar, who has 15 cases against him. The DMK’s rule has seen a rise in crimes against women and minors.”

BJP’s demonstration and Annamalai’s criticism

BJP members, led by former Tamil Nadu BJP president Tamilisai Soundararajan, staged a protest near Valluvar Kottam, condemning the incident and the alleged inaction of the DMK government. Tamilisai and other BJP leaders were detained by police during the protest.

BJP state President K Annamalai criticised the DMK for shielding the accused, who allegedly has ties to the ruling party. Addressing the media, Annamalai said, “The leak of the victim’s FIR details is a blatant violation of her privacy and human rights. The DMK government prioritizes protecting its members over justice for victims. Tamil Nadu has become increasingly unsafe for women under this regime.”

Annamalai announced a symbolic protest outside his Coimbatore residence, where he plans to whip himself six times to condemn the incident. He also vowed to visit Murugan temples across Tamil Nadu during a 48-day fast, intensifying his campaign against the DMK.
