Rajiv Gandhi assassination convict Santhan issued travel document, TN govt tells HC

The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday, 13 February, informed the Madras High Court that the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission in Chennai has issued temporary travel documents to Santhan, a Sri Lankan national convicted in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, and freed in 2022.

The submission was made before a bench of Justices R Suresh Kumar and K Kumaresh Babu.

Suthendraraja T alias Santhan has been accommodated in the special camp, Tiruchirappalli post his release.

The External Affairs Ministry has been requested to take necessary action for the issuance of emergency travel document.

A request has been made to the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO), here.

The court granted FRRO time till 29 February to respond and posted the matter for hearing on that day.

Escort to Murugan

Earlier, The high court had directed the Tamil Nadu government to provide the necessary escort to Sriharan alias Murugan, another convicted freed in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, to enable him to appear before the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission in Chennai to get a passport.

A division bench comprising Justices D Krishnakumar and P Dhanabal gave the above directive in a recent order while disposing of a petition filed by Sriharan, a Sri Lankan national.

He sought a direction to the authorities to permit him to go to Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission office in Chennai with a proper escort to get an all-country passport and permit him to leave the country at his own cost.
