The Central Crime Branch (CCB) of the Tamil Nadu police in Chennai on Saturday, 27 June, arrested BT Arasakumar, founder-president of the unregistered Tamil Nadu Private Schools Association (TNPSAA), in connection with an alleged fraud case involving more than ₹100 crore.
He was taken into custody by the Economic Documents Fraud (EDF-III) wing and will be produced before the Egmore Court in Chennai for judicial remand.
The case was registered based on a complaint filed by Ilangovan, secretary of the Federation of Associations of Private Schools in Tamil Nadu.
It is alleged that Arasakumar and others collected huge sums from private school managements across Tamil Nadu over the past two years by promising to secure permanent recognition, school upgradation approvals, DTCP/CMDA clearances and other statutory permissions using claimed political and bureaucratic influence.
Police said the accused, operating from Saligramam under the banner of the unregistered Tamil Nadu Private Schools Association, failed to obtain the promised approvals and did not return the money, allegedly cheating several school managements statewide.
Following an investigation ordered by Chennai Police Commissioner A Amalraj, the CCB arrested Arasakumar. Further investigation is underway.
Reportedly, six school associations merged to form TNPSAA in December 2024, with Arasakumar as its president. The launch event was attended by the then-minister, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, and senior officials of the School Education Department.
