The free power up to 100 units for all domestic consumers and subsidy for those including handlooms, agriculture and places of worship will continue.

For 63 lakh domestic consumers using up to 200 units for two months, the increase will be a maximum of ₹ five per month, it said.

The new tariff for 35 lakh domestic users consuming up to 300 units for two months will be a maximum of ₹15 per month.

The revised tariff for domestic consumers consuming 400 units and 500 units for two months will be ₹25 and ₹40 per month, respectively.

Opposition criticises the move

Opposition parties including the Pattali Makkal Katchi and Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam opposed the tariff revision.

Eddapadi K Palaniswami, the Leader of Opposition took to X to strongly criticise the DMK government.

He further said that, the chief minister waited for the general and bypoll elections to end to increase the tarrif.

Demanding a rollback on the tariff increase, Palaniswami said, “It is unfair to put the burden of your administrative incompetence on people’s heads. It has become a habit of the DMK government to torture the people, without the basic capacity to provide uninterrupted power. I strongly condemn the DMK government for repeatedly increasing the electricity tariff.”
