Tamil Nadu witnessed overnight rains in southern Tamil Nadu and the Cauvery Delta regions on Monday, 8 January.
Schools were closed in some districts and crops ready for harvest were damaged in certain parts of the state.
The Indian Meteorological Department, on Tuesday, 9 January, reported that Marakkanam in Viluppuram district witnessed the most rains, recording 19 cm of rain, on Monday night.
Viluppuram was followed by Chengalpattu district.

The independent Tamil Nadu weather channel Chennai Rains said that, on Tuesday, the Tirunelveli Ghats would see heavy rains, while southern and western Tamil Nadu and the Delta regions would see moderate rains.

AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami demanded that the state government provide relief to farmers for the crop loss suffered.
Palaniswami said that in Nagapattinam district, paddy crops ready for harvest in an expanse of about 30,000 acres were damaged following rains over the past couple of days.
Similarly, there was crop loss in Chidambaram in Cuddalore district and in the districts of Mayiladuthurai and Tiruvarur, he said in a statement.
The Leader of Opposition and former chief minister said that the government should declare a minimum relief of ₹25,000 per acre and also ensure appropriate compensation for farmers under crop insurance.
On Monday, the flow of water to Chembarambakkam lake increased from 36 cubic feet on Sunday to 497 cubic feet on Monday.
In Chembarambakkam, which has a capacity of 3,645 million cubic feet, the current water reserve is 3,132 million cubic feet, as on Monday morning. About 108 cubic feet of water is being released from the lake for drinking water.
Chennai and neighbouring Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram, besides Viluppuram and Kallakurichi, received good spells of rain, while the Cauvery delta regions ,including Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, and Tiruvarur, received moderate to heavy rain.
A Regional Meteorological Centre bulletin said that a trough in the easterlies runs from south Sri Lanka to north coastal Tamil Nadu in the lower tropospheric levels, under the influence of which light to moderate rainfall occurred at many places in the state, heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places in northern coastal areas, and extremely heavy rainfall at a few areas in Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, and Tiruvarur districts.
The RMC said that till 9 January morning, a few spells of light-to-moderate rains are likely in Chennai and the neighbourhood and heavy rainfall in some areas.
Monday was declared a holiday for schools in some districts, including Chengalpattu, Ranipet, Vellore, and Kallakurichi. Schools and colleges in Nagapattinam and Keelvelur areas were also closed on 8 January.
