Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president MK Stalin, who is undergoing treatment at the Kauvery Hospital in Chennai for Covid-19, is recuperating well and will be discharged in two days, said Health and Family Welfare Minister Ma Subramanian on Saturday, 16 July.
Stalin was admitted to the hospital on Thursday for investigation and observation for Covid-related symptoms.
The hospital management, in a statement, confirmed that he had tested positive for Covid-19.
“The chief minister is doing fine, and he will be back home in two days,” Subramaniam told reporters on Saturday.
On Friday, the hospital management said doctors had completed the investigations regarding Covid-19 and provided medicines as per protocol.
It also said Stalin had been advised to rest for a few days.
Briefing the reporters about being vigilant in the wake of Monkeypox, Subramaniam told reporters that the Tamil Nadu health department had urged the Union government and the ICMR to locate at least one research and diagnostic lab in Chennai to deal with Monkeypox infections.
“We are screening all the passengers coming from abroad to Chennai. More than 26 people tested positive for Covid-19 when we screened them. However, no symptoms of Monkeypox were witnessed among them,” said the minister.
He added that the health department had instructed the Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital in Chennai to be vigilant, and that the hospital has made arrangements for a special ward with 10 beds to deal with Monkeypox cases if they come.
“Besides this, we have also put up name boards and advertisements to spread awareness about Monkeypox among travellers,” said Subramaniam.
“The random RT-PCR tests are also underway. People don’t have to be afraid. The state is free of Monkeypox to date,” he added.
