Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin meets Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Wednesday, August 17, and discussed the NEET exemption bill, the Electricity Act (Amendment) Bill, the Cauvery river water issue, and the National Education Policy 2020, among other things.

According to the DMK sources, the other matters discussed in the more-than-20-minute meeting included the National Commission for Fisherman, the Mullaperiyar dam issue, GST arrears of Tamil Nadu, the immediate release of the disaster relief fund, and the expansion of Chennai airport.

During the meeting, Stalin gifted Modi a book on the Chess Olympiad and Tamil Nadu’s traditional small grains and rice varieties.

He also thanked Modi for his cooperation in organising the 44th Chess Olympiad in Chennai. He requested that Tamil Nadu be given more opportunities by the Union government to host such International competitions.

“Though several demands of Tamil Nadu flagged by the prime minister during such past visits were inching towards fulfilment, a host of other representations are yet to be taken up by the Centre. I am going to remind him of such representations and return to Chennai tonight,” Stalin said.

Hours before leaving for Delhi on Tuesday, Stalin, addressing a gathering at the birthday event of Viduthalai Chiruthai Katchi Chief Thol Thirumavalavan, said his visit to Delhi was to requisition projects for the state.

“I have two responsibilities. One is the chief of the DMK, and another is the chief minister of Tamil Nadu. I’m not visiting Delhi to lift ‘Kavadi’ and stand with my hands tied and mouth gagged. I’m the son of Kalaignar. I have the responsibility to get schemes for the state from the Union government,” he said.

Stalin also said that the DMK would never compromise its ideology for the BJP, adding that it doesn’t have any ties with the BJP other than the state government-Union government relationship.

Stalin meets President & VP

Before meeting Modi, Stalin called on newly-elected President Droupadi Murmu and Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and termed them as courtesy visits.

The visit was the first by Stalin to the President and vice-president since they took charge.

Stalin told reporters in Delhi that said he couldn’t take part in the swearing-in ceremonies of Murmu and Dhankhar because of various reasons.

He added that he conveyed his greetings to them.
