‘Medicine, not prohibited substance’: TN Minister Sarath Kumar after viral video triggers controversy

Synopsis: Tamil Nadu Human Resources Minister D Sarath Kumar has denied allegations that he was handling narcotics after an undated video from a cricket match went viral on social media. He told South First that the video, recorded about three years ago at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, showed him crushing a cold tablet for his young daughter, who was unwell.

Tamil Nadu Human Resources Minister D Sarath Kumar has found himself at the centre of a controversy after an undated video, showing him handling a white powder-like substance during a cricket match, surfaced online recently. The video quickly went viral with several handles suspecting it to be narcotics.

Sarath Kumar, however, dismissed the allegations, saying the substance seen in the video was medicine for his daughter and not any prohibited substance.

Speaking to South First, the Minister said the video was recorded nearly three years ago when he, his family and friends had gone to watch a cricket match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk, Chennai.

According to him, his daughter developed cold-related symptoms during the outing and required medication immediately. As she was too young to swallow a tablet properly, he said he crushed the medicine before giving it to her.

His wife, who was also present during the incident, confirmed the same sequence of events and said there was nothing unusual about what happened that day.

The Minister said the narrative currently being built around the video was “completely false”.

He further maintained that the video had been casually recorded at the stadium by one of the friends accompanying the family that day. According to him, the clip was uploaded on social media at the time without attracting any attention or controversy.
