On the night of Tuesday, 5 August, at around 11 PM a man identified as arrived at the Big Bazaar Street Police Station, and died inside the police station by suicide, prompting judicial inquiry into the incident.
He told the on-duty constable that he was being followed by some people. The constable, who was engaged with another task, informed him that the matter would be looked into. While the officer was away, the man went to the first floor of the station and entered the office of the Assistant Sub-Inspector (Crime Wing), where he took his own life by hanging himself.
However, the incident came to light only around 7 AM on Wednesday, 6 August, when officers reported for duty and discovered the body inside the ASI’s room. Senior officials were immediately informed of the incident.

Further addressing the media at Ukkadam Police Station, he explained, “When constable Senthilkumar was on duty, the man came in and said he was being chased. After briefly speaking to the constable, he went upstairs unnoticed and hanged himself using his veshti (a traditional garment) in the ASI’s room. No one knew about the suicide until morning, when police opened the room after noticing someone inside and found the deceased hanging.”
“A judicial probe is now underway. CCTV footage shows the man arriving by bus, walking through the Bothis Corner area, entering the police station, and then going upstairs. A diary found in his pocket revealed his name as Rajan, aged 50, from Ramachettipalayam. His family confirmed that he had been suffering from depression for the past 10 days.”
After the judicial probe, further action will be taken, including disciplinary measures against any police personnel found to be negligent during their night duty. Commissioner Sundar emphasized that this cannot be termed a “lock-up death” as the man was not under custody but had entered the station and died by suicide.
The body has been sent to Coimbatore Government Hospital for post-mortem examination. Rajan’s family members were brought to the station and questioned.
