Key regulations

The Chennai police issued a slew of directives to ensure that the public is bursting firecrackers in a safe environment.

  • Sale and use of green crackers: Only firecrackers manufactured from eco-friendly chemicals, known as “green crackers,” are permitted for sale and use. This is in compliance with a Supreme Court directive to reduce pollution.
  • Designated timeframes for bursting crackers: Firecrackers can only be ignited during specific time slots: from 6.00 am to 7.00 am and from 7.00 pm to 8.00 pm. Authorities urged the public to strictly adhere to these hours to minimise noise disturbances and potential accidents.
  • Noise level restrictions: In accordance with Rule 89 of the Environment Protection Rules, firecrackers that emit noise levels exceeding 125 decibels at a distance of four meters are banned. This regulation aims to prevent noise pollution and its associated health risks.
  • Safety precautions: Citizens are advised against bursting firecrackers near flammable materials, including parked vehicles and petrol stations. It is essential to avoid throwing lighted firecrackers carelessly, as this can pose a danger to bystanders.
  • Child safety guidelines: Parents are reminded to supervise children closely while handling firecrackers. The use of firecrackers near thatched roofs or in slum areas is discouraged to prevent fire accidents.
  • Emergency contacts: In the case of any accidents or emergencies, the public should reach out to the authorities concerned at the following helpline numbers.
  • Police: 100
  • Fire and Rescue Services: 101
  • Medical Emergencies: 108
  • National Helpline: 112
