DMK Deputy General Secretary and Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi has strongly opposed the proposed extraction of beach sand minerals and rare earth elements from the Kuthiraimozhi and Sathankulam Theri regions in southern Tamil Nadu.
These regions feature thick red dunes, which give them their name, Theri.
Among the minerals found here are garnet, ilmenite, magnetite, rutile, zircon and quartz.
In a statement, Kanimozhi said the Kuthiraimozhi and Sathankulam Theri regions are ecologically and geologically significant landscapes, known for their red dunes and serving as habitats for a wide variety of plant and animal species.
She pointed out that while efforts are underway to declare these Theri regions as wildlife sanctuaries and eco-sensitive zones, the state Mineral Resources Department was simultaneously pursuing plans to extract beach sand minerals and rare earth elements from the same landscape.
Describing the Theri regions as rare landscapes of Tamil Nadu and important ecological areas that require protection, Kanimozhi urged the government to immediately abandon any plans that would lead to their destruction.
She stressed the need to protect the unique ecosystem and biodiversity of the Theri regionss rather than permit mineral extraction activities that could adversely affect the region.
DMK leader and Leader of Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Udhayanidhi Stalin had alleged a few days ago that three associates of CM Vijay — Vishnu Reddy, Sujay Reddy and Anil Reddy — were controlling the Tamil Nadu Mineral Resources Department.
“I am making an open allegation against this government. The chief minister’s friends and advisers include Vishnu Reddy. Vishnu Reddy, along with his brother-in-law Sujay Reddy and business partner Anil Reddy, is now in full control of mining activities, including government-run mining operations. I will release the evidence for each of these allegations one by one,” he had charged.
Udhayanidhi had said he would release the evidence supporting the charges in stages.
