Synopsis: DMK leader Kanimozhi Karunanidhi criticised the TVK government, alleging that it had failed to maintain law and order in the State after a brutal attack on a family at Mudalur, near Sathankulam in Thoothukudi district, left a 39-year-old woman dead. After visiting the injured family members at Tirunelveli, Kanimozhi said crime should have declined in the four months since the government took office, but alleged that offences continued to rise because the authorities were failing to take effective action.

DMK Deputy General Secretary and Parliamentary Party Leader Kanimozhi Karunanidhi on Friday, 23 October criticised the TVK government in Tamil Nadu after a brutal attack on a family at Mudalur, near Sathankulam in Thoothukudi district, left a 39-year-old woman dead, her husband and 10-year-old son seriously injured, and her two daughters abducted before being rescued.

Mary Rejila was killed when the assailant allegedly broke into the family’s house in the early hours of Friday. The two girls who went missing after the attack were later rescued. The accused, identified as Gnanasekar, was arrested.

Kanimozhi visited Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital and enquired about the condition of Muthukrishnan, 50, and his son, Blessed Raja, who are receiving intensive treatment.

She said the attack raised serious questions about the safety of women and children in Tamil Nadu.

Speaking to reporters after the visit, she said the attack raised serious questions about the safety of women and children in Tamil Nadu.

The 10-year-old boy had been brutally assaulted and lost his fingers in the attack, Kanimozhi said. His father had suffered deep cuts to several parts of his body. She raised concern about the boy’s future after the loss of his mother.

‘Rise in crime since TVK assumed office’

Kanimozhi said murders and violence against women and children continued across Tamil Nadu, leaving people afraid for their safety.

“If someone can enter a house, kill a mother, attack the father and a 10-year-old schoolboy, and abduct two girls, people are left without security whether they are inside their homes or outside,” she said.

She claimed that four murders had taken place in Thoothukudi district on Friday and that serious crimes were being reported across the State every day.

The police department comes directly under the Chief Minister’s control, Kanimozhi said, asking: “What is the Chief Minister doing?” She added that anyone with a conscience could understand the situation.

She said crime should have declined in the four months since the government took office, but alleged that offences continued to rise because the authorities were not taking effective action.

“If crimes continue to increase every day without action being taken, who is responsible? The reason could be incompetence or a lack of concern,” she said.
