Sravan Kumar Jatavath, the new Kallakurichi district collector

Kallakurichi district collector PN Sridhar and Superintendent of Police P Selvakumar have been served transfer orders over the violence that erupted during the protests in Kallakurichi.
Chief Minister MK Stalin, on Tuesday, 19 July, after holding a video conference with School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi and Minister of Public works, Highways and Minor Ports EV Velu, is said to have taken the decision.

While the PN Sridhar has been replaced by Sravan Kumar Jatavath, the Additional Director of Agriculture, Deputy Commissioner of Police of Triplicane in Chennai P Pakalavan replaced P Selvakumar at Kallakurichi.

Reportedly, an 18-year-old Class 12 girl was found dead on 13 July in a private school in the Kaniyamoor village of the Kallakurichi district.

Protests turned violent

Speaking to South First, the police told that the girl had jumped to death from the school building.

The police said that in her suicide note, she mentioned that she was taking the step as she was unable to bear the mental harassment by some of her teachers.

Later, Selvi, the girl’s mother, alleged foul play by the school management and protested in front of the school along with her relatives and other student outfits, demanding justice.

The protests, however, turned violent on Sunday, 17 July when the protestors set school buses and police vans on fire.

High Court orders

The Madras High Court, on 18 July, ordered a fresh postmortem of the girl’s body by appointing three doctors.

The transfer orders, however, came minutes before the fresh post-mortem of the girl’s body began.

The bench led by Justice N Sathish Kumar ordered a CB-CID probe into the issue, noting that the CB-CID must probe all deaths in educational institutions.

The district police had earlier arrested more than a hundred people for their alleged involvement in the violence and registered cases under various IPC sections.

Chief Minister MK Stalin during the video conference with the ministers said that the law would punish those involved in the violence.
