The parents of the class 12 student who was found dead in a private school in the Kallakurichi district of Tamil Nadu informed the Madras High Court on Friday, 22 July, that they were ready to receive her mortal remains on Saturday morning.
Justice N Satish Kumar of the Madras High Court recorded the submission that the parents would receive the girl’s mortal remains by 6-7 am on Saturday and perform her final rites by the end of the day.
The court, meanwhile, directed a team of doctors from the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) in Puducherry to analyse the two autopsy reports of the girl and the video recordings of the procedure.
The family of the 17-year-old girl was unwilling to receive the body until a doctor of their choice was included in the panel of forensic experts who performed the second post-mortem.
The judge said that even though his sympathies were with the girl’s family, he asked them about the delay in receiving the body after the Tamil Nadu government approached the court regarding the issue.
Importantly, the high court-appointed medical team that conducted the second post-mortem of the child informed the court that it did not find anything new.
The first post-mortem report noted that the girl appeared to have died of “haemorrhage and shock due to multiple injuries sustained”.
Though the state police maintain that the girl died by suicide over alleged pressure from and torture by two of her teachers, the family suspects foul play and has accused the investigation team of not looking into the allegations of sexual assault and murder seriously.
Massive violence had broken out at the Kanimayoor Shakti Matriculation school in Kallakurichi district on 17 July demanding justice for the student. The school was vandalised and several police officials were also attacked by the protestors who gathered in large numbers at the school.
Though the parents of the girl student had approached the Supreme Court seeking to include a doctor of their choice to perform the second post-mortem, the apex court refused to entertain their plea.
