A 25-year-old woman died by suicide on Saturday, 21 March, at her residence in Moolaikkaraipatti in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district, in protest over her father’s murder earlier this month.

The victim, identified as Baby Kani, took the extreme step days after her father, Arumugam, a farmer, was brutally hacked to death on 17 March.

Her family said the police have not identified or arrested those responsible for the killing of Arumugam even days after the murder, and have been protesting for the past five days while refusing to receive his body.

Following Baby Kani’s death, relatives continued their protest in front of the hospital. The twin deaths have triggered a tense atmosphere in the area.

Police personnel have been deployed in large numbers at the hospital premises to prevent any untoward incidents.
