TVK leader Vijay pledges support to Parandur protesters against airport project

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party leader Vijay has expressed strong support for the people of Parandur who are protesting against the proposed airport project, which threatens to displace residents of 13 villages.

Interestingly, Vijay begins his public outreach programmes with his solidarity towards residents of Parandur. South First had earlier reported that the actor-turned-politician will kickstart his mass outreach programmes after Pongal celebrations.

Vijay, who visited Parandur to meet the protesters, delivered a heartfelt speech, assuring the community of his unwavering commitment to their cause.

“I will stand with you always,” Vijay declared. “For over 910 days, you have been fighting for your land. I heard a little boy named Rahul speak about your struggle. His words touched my heart deeply. Immediately, I felt the urge to meet all of you, to speak with you all.”

During his visit, Vijay emphasised his belief that development should not come at the cost of the people’s well-being.

“My journey in ground-level politics begins here. I oppose the plan to construct an airport in Parandur, which would submerge Chennai in floods,” he said.

He clarified that while he supports the need for an airport, he believes the proposed location is unsuitable. Vijay pointed out the environmental risks the project poses, particularly the potential flooding in Chennai.

“Recent studies reveal that Chennai’s struggle with floods is due to the destruction of water bodies in the region. Building an airport in Parandur would exacerbate this issue,” he added.

He praised the Tamil Nadu government’s decision in the Arittapatti case, where development plans were reconsidered in favour of environmental conservation, and urged a similar approach for Parandur.

“The airport should be built in an area without agricultural lands. Development projects should not destroy agriculture,” Vijay emphasised.

Vijay also assured the protesters that their fight would be legally supported, stating, “We will carry out all protests against the Parandur airport project in accordance with the law. Stay hopeful; good things will happen. Victory is certain.”

Protests against the airport project

The proposed Parandur airport project has become a focal point of intense opposition, with local communities in Kanchipuram protesting vehemently against the acquisition of their land and homes for the construction of the airport.

The project, which aims to build a major international airport to alleviate congestion at Chennai International Airport, has faced significant resistance from villagers who fear the loss of their agricultural land, residential areas, and livelihoods.

For over two years, residents have rallied against the plan, citing the potential displacement of thousands of families and the disruption of their way of life.

Despite repeated attempts by officials to quell the protests, the villagers have remained resolute in their opposition. They argue that constructing the airport in Parandur would result in irreversible harm to the local community, uprooting families and undermining the region’s agricultural economy.

While the Tamil Nadu government is committed to moving forward with the project, protesters – including both residents and environmentalists – continue to demand a reevaluation of the plan.

They urge the government to explore sustainable development alternatives that would protect the community’s way of life, while addressing the need for a new airport.
