The counting of votes cast for the 2026 Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu began at 8 am on Monday, 4 May, with a total of 4,023 candidates in the fray across 234 constituencies in the state.
Authorities have completed preparations for the process at 234 counting halls across the state, and security arrangements are in place. The counting will begin with postal ballots, followed by votes recorded in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
According to the Election Commission, 85.1 percent of the 5.73 crore registered voters across the state’s 234 constituencies cast their votes, the highest in the state’s history.
After winning a second term from the Chepauk–Triplicane constituency, Udhayanidhi Stalin thanked voters and party workers.
“I thank the people of my constituency. I will once again work with full dedication as a good MLA for my constituency. My gratitude to the party functionaries and the people of the constituency who worked for this victory,” he said.
“The people of Tamil Nadu have delivered their verdict, and we humbly accept it. I also extend my congratulations to all the winning MLAs and to the new government that is set to take charge.
Congress MP Manickam Tagore said the verdict is a clear call for change.
“Tamil Nadu voted for change and we must accept it. The state has once again rejected the NDA, along with the surrendered Palaniswami. The entry of hate has been stopped,” he said.
He urged “secular forces” to remain vigilant and come together to prevent manipulation of the verdict and protect Tamil Nadu from “RSS proxies and hate politics.”
He added that differences must be set aside, saying “all egos must be left behind to protect Tamil Nadu.”
DMDK leader Premalatha Vijayakanth has won in Virudhachalam. In Karaikudi, NTK chief Seeman has lost to TVK candidate Dr Prabhu.
Separately, Ministers SS Sivasankar and Thangam Thennarasu have won in Kunnam and Tiruchuli respectively. In Mannargudi, Minister TRB Rajaa has been defeated.
The TVK has been declared victorious in 31 constituencies, while the DMK has won 21 seats and the AIADMK has secured 10.
In the Tiruchirappalli East constituency, Vijay is leading by 26,000 votes, effectively confirming his win.
Former BJP state president K Annamalai congratulated Vijay and the TVK on their “spectacular debut”, saying he “bows down to the people” and respects their mandate.
“I am happy to see that in my land, people have risen in one voice and spoken – no to buying of votes, no to dynastic politics, and yes to a generational shift in politics. Whoever has made this happen has done a favour to all,” he said. “Let the Almighty be with you to do what you intend to do.”
He called it a hard-fought battle for NDA candidates, congratulated those who won and asked others to continue working on the ground.
Annamalai also expressed condolences to DMK president MK Stalin and NTK leader Seeman on their losses, and thanked BJP cadres and leaders in Tamil Nadu for their work, adding that “better times will come soon.”
Several actors from the Tamil film industry have congratulated Vijay after the strong performance of the TVK in its debut election.
Actor Sivakarthikeyan, in a post on social media, praised Vijay for making a strong impact in his first electoral outing.
“Congratulations to Vijay sir for achieving such a big victory and impact in his first election. It is an added joy that you come from the film industry. Wishing you success in your public service,” he said.
Actors Jiiva and GV Prakash Kumar also shared messages on social media, praising the party’s performance.
DMK leader and Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin won the Chepauk–Triplicane constituency.
In the Nanguneri constituency, TVK candidate Reddiyarpatti Narayanan has won. In the Palayamkottai constituency, DMK candidate Abdul Wahab has emerged victorious.
In Kolathur, Chief Minister MK Stalin lost to TVK’s VS Babu by 9,122 votes.
In Anna Nagar, TVK candidate VK Ramkumar won with 71,375 votes, a margin of 21,363.
In Arakkonam, TVK’s Gandhi Raj won.
In Jolarpet, AIADMK’s KC Veeramani won.
In Uthiramerur, TVK’s Munirathinam won.
In Udhagamandalam (Ooty), BJP’s Bojarajan won.

The TVK has secured 34.72 percent of the vote share, or about 1.18 crore votes, according to figures from the Election Commission of India.
The DMK has polled around 24 percent, with about 84 lakh votes, while the AIADMK has 21 percent, or about 73.93 lakh votes.

In the Vedaranyam constituency, the victory of AIADMK’s former minister OS Manian has been confirmed. With only three rounds of counting remaining, his win is considered certain.

BJP's A Namassivayam has won the Mannadipet constituency in Puducherry with a margin of 6,110 votes.
In the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the first victory has been recorded in the Melur constituency in Madurai, where Congress candidate Vishwanathan has won.
DMK's V Cartigueyane has won from the Nellithope Assembly constituency in Puducherry with a margin of 850 votes.
According to the latest update from the Election Commission, based on the votes counted so far, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has secured more than 38 percent of the vote share, roughly 56.90lakh votes, while the DMK has received 24 percent (35.24lakh) and the AIADMK 22 percent (32.52lakh).

Across the four districts of Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu, the TVK is leading in 34 out of 37 constituencies.
At the end of the sixth round of counting in the Kolathur constituency, TVK candidate VS Babu is leading with 24,993 votes, while Chief Minister MK Stalin is trailing with 20,982 votes.

In most constituencies in Chennai, the DMK is currently leading in the postal ballot count.
In the counting of postal ballots, the DMK is leading in 11 constituencies, while the AIADMK is leading in two and TVK in two.
In Mylapore, BJP's Tamilisai Soundararajan is leading with a margin of 28 votes. TVK is leading in Tiruchirappalli West.
The counting centre for the Tirupparankundram and Thirumangalam constituencies in Tamil Nadu has been set up at the Government College in Kappalur. However, political party representatives have raised objections, alleging that the counting process began a few minutes earlier than scheduled.
They have also complained about the lack of basic facilities at the centre. Due to this, the counting of postal ballots is likely to be delayed slightly.
Meanwhile, vote counting has commenced at all 65 counting centres across Tamil Nadu and six in Puducherry.
The counting of votes for the 2026 Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Assembly elections is set to begin soon. In Tamil Nadu, a total of 4,611 counting tables have been arranged across the state’s 234 constituencies.
The Union Territory of Puducherry is all set for the counting of votes to elect a 30-member Legislative Assembly. Preparations are complete in all six counting centres spread across the four regions of Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. Election officials, some of the candidates, polling agents of candidates and political parties have started arriving at the counting centres from 7 am.
The counting of postal ballots will commence at 8 am. Half an hour later, the seals of the rooms where the EVMs are stored will be opened in the presence of representatives of all political parties, following which the counting of votes will begin.
