Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned the deaths in the stampede at the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) event at Velumchamypuram in Tamil Nadu’s Karur on Saturday, 27 September.

The tragic incident has left 31 people, including six children, dead, and scores of others injured, as a crowd surged forward to catch a better glimpse of actor-politician Vijay, who was addressing the political rally.

“The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Wishing strength to them in this difficult time. Praying for a swift recovery for all those injured,” Prime Minister Modi said on X.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah offered his condolences to the bereaved families.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic incident of the stampede that occurred in Karur, Tamil Nadu. I express my heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. “The loss of more than 31 lives in a stampede during a campaign meeting cannot be justified in any way.
