Electrocution

Synopsis: Four people lost their lives due to electrocution during an annual church festival in the Kanniyakumari district of Tamil Nadu. The deceased were engaged in arranging decorations when an iron ladder came into contact with an electric wire. The Tamil Nadu government announced financial assistance of ₹5 lakh each to the families of the deceased.

Four people lost their lives due to electrocution on Saturday, 1 March, during an annual church festival in the Kanniyakumari district of Tamil Nadu.

The deceased — identified as Vijayan (52), Soban (45), Manu (42), and Justice (35) — were engaged in arranging decorations for the annual festival of St Anthony’s Church in the coastal fishing village of Inayam Puthenthurai, located in Killiyoor Taluk.

The tragic accident occurred on Saturday evening during a chariot procession.

The incident

They attempted to move an iron ladder — used for decorative and other preparations — from one spot on the roadside to another. It accidentally came into contact with an electric wire, resulting in electrocution.

Following the incident, the Tamil Nadu government announced financial assistance of ₹5 lakh each to the families of the deceased from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund.

“I am deeply saddened and distressed upon hearing this unfortunate news. I extend my heartfelt condolences and sympathy to the families of the deceased. Additionally, I have ordered a financial assistance of ₹5 lakh for each of the bereaved families from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund,” Chief Minister MK Stalin said in a statement.
