Synopsis: Senior AIADMK leader and former minister KA Sengottaiyan — who was recently expelled from the party — is set to join actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
A significant political shift appears to be underway in Tamil Nadu as former minister KA Sengottaiyan met Assembly Speaker Appavu at the Secretariat on Wednesday, 26 October, and submitted his resignation letter, relinquishing his post as Gobichettipalayam MLA.
The development comes on the heels of reports emerging that the senior leader, who was recently expelled from the AIADMK, is set to join actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on Thursday.
According to his supporters, Sengottaiyan is scheduled to meet Vijay in person on Wednesday.
Early on Wednesday morning, Sengottaiyan had left his Chennai residence, reportedly to meet someone. However, he returned soon after since the media questioned the reason behind his travel.
Meanwhile, according to sources within the leader’s camp, DMK minister S Muthusamy, previously with the AIADMK, reportedly met Sengottaiyan in Erode last week.
Since Sengottaiyan has quit both the AIADMK and his MLA post, political commentators observe that he now has the option of aligning with either the DMK or the TVK.
However, TVK sources reiterated that he would join the actor Vijay-led party.
On 5 September, addressing the media, Sengottaiyan gave AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami an ultimatum to unify the party. Following his statement, Sengottaiyan was removed from his party responsibilities.
Later, during the Thevar Jayanthi celebrations, he appeared alongside already expelled leaders O Panneerselvam and TTV Dhinakaran at Pasumpon, where they gave a joint interview.
Subsequently, on 31 October, the AIADMK announced his removal from all basic party positions. Meanwhile, O Panneerselvam (OPS) had warned that if the party were not unified by 15 December, he would proceed with the next phase of action.
With the AIADMK’s crucial general council meeting scheduled for 10 December in Vanagaram, Chennai, OPS’s deadline has been viewed as significant. In this backdrop, the news that Sengottaiyan is preparing to join TVK has triggered political tremors.
Reports suggested that Sengottaiyan had already met Vijay once and that he would officially join TVK on Thursday. His supporters have confirmed that Sengottaiyan will meet Vijay in Chennai on Wednesday.
When reporters in Gobichettipalayam asked Sengottaiyan on Tuesday whether he would join the TVK, he replied with a dig at the AIADMK.
“After working for this party for 50 years, it has rewarded me by stripping me of all leadership positions and even the basic membership. This has caused me deep distress. I do not wish to comment on anything else,” he said.
Meanwhile, his supporters told South First that Wednesday’s meeting was just a casual one and not for making any official decisions.
If Sengottaiyan joins TVK, former AIADMK MP Sathyabama — who was also expelled by the party — along with his followers and key functionaries in Erode, will also join the party.
TVK is also expected to appoint Sengottaiyan to a post equivalent to its General Secretary N Anandh.
