Synopsis: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami extended his best wishes to the party that will form the government. However, he did not name any party.
Even as suspense continued over the government formation in Tamil Nadu following a fractured mandate in the 23 April elections, the AIADMK, for the first time, extended its wishes to the party set to assume power in the state.
“Candidates from various parties contested and won the recently concluded 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections. I extend my heartfelt wishes to the party that will form the government in Tamil Nadu,” AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami said on Saturday, 9 May.
However, Palaniswamy did not name any party or leader, adding to the intrigue.
His statement has gained political significance amid intense speculation about a possible DMK-AIADMK arrangement to prevent the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) from forming the government.
TVK emerged as the single-largest party, winning 108 constituencies, but fell short of the 118-seat majority required in the 234-member Assembly.
So far, TVK has earned the support of the Congress, CPI, and CPI(M), and is expecting the formal backing of VCK to form the government.
