The Tamil Nadu police have permitted the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to hold a public meeting in Salem on Friday, 13 February, with several conditions, including a cap on the number of participants.
Conditions have been laid in the backdrop of the Karur stampede that claimed 41 lives, when the crowd, more than the venue could accommodate, surged forward to see TVK leader, actor Vijay, on 27 September 2025.
Entry to the venue will strictly be based on QR-code passes issued to only 4,998 people. The police and organisers have appealed to pregnant women and senior citizens to avoid attending the meeting due to security reasons.
In a statement, the TVK requested that those who have received the passes comply with the organisers. “We request that party members and the public, who have not received QR code passes, strictly avoid coming in person,” it said.
An adequate number of ambulances will be deployed at KVP Garden in Seelanaickanpatti, where the meeting has been scheduled from 12 noon to 3 pm. The organisers have been asked to ensure drinking water for the participants.
The organisers have arranged for the live streaming of the event on social media platforms. The police have installed 51 CCTV cameras at the venue for close monitoring.
Earlier, the Puducherry police had allowed the TVK to hold a meeting in December, based on similar conditions.
