Synopsis: The incident occurred on Tuesday, 30 September when workers were standing on a temporary base at a height of 45 metres, which suddenly gave way. Ten people fell in the mishap, nine were declared dead at the Government Royapettah Stanley Hospital, while one worker remains under treatment.
Police have registered a case against the contractor involved in the Ennore SEZ Thermal Power Station project after a scaffolding collapse killed nine migrant workers from Assam and injured one.
Officials from Kattur Police Station confirmed that the case has been filed under relevant sections, and investigations are ongoing.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, 30 September when workers were standing on a temporary base at a height of 45 metres, which suddenly gave way.
Ten people fell in the mishap, nine were declared dead at the Government Royapettah Stanley Hospital, while one worker remains under treatment. The project is being carried out by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) on a design-and-build contract.
Relief measures were swiftly announced. Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared ₹2 lakh ex-gratia from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for each of the deceased, while Chief Minister MK Stalin announced ₹10 lakh compensation for the bereaved families.
Stalin also directed Electricity Minister SS Sivasankar and TANGEDCO Chairman K. Radhakrishnan to oversee rescue and relief operations at the site.
Political leaders across parties expressed grief over the tragedy. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami and Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K. Selvaperunthagai conveyed condolences and stressed the need for stricter safety protocols at construction sites.
