AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to grant a six-month moratorium on loan repayments, saying it would help protect jobs in Tamil Nadu’s textile sector affected by higher US tariffs on Indian exports.
In a statement, he said the new duties would make Indian goods costlier in the US, leading to a fall in demand. “If production is disrupted, even exporting to other countries will become difficult,” he said.
Palaniswami also criticised the DMK government, accusing it of worsening the textile industry’s problems since 2021 through higher property tax, electricity tariffs, and cotton prices.
Referring to Chief Minister MK Stalin’s appeal to the Union government, he said the state government should first take practical steps to support spinning mills in Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruppur, Karur and Namakkal, which employ thousands of workers.
He added that the sector has been struggling with multiple challenges for the past three years and warned that many workers’ livelihoods were at risk if urgent action was not taken.
Separately, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam president Vijay also urged both the Union and State governments to act quickly. He proposed forming a Union–States Tariff Response Task Force with industry and trade representatives to draft relief measures and support exporters.
