ECI removes 23 registered, unrecognised political parties from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry

With this decision, these parties will lose all benefits under Section 29B and Section 29C of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, certain provisions of the Income Tax Act, 1961, and the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) removed 22 registered but unrecognised political parties from Tamil Nadu and one from Puducherry from its records. Across the country, 334 such parties have been delisted.

With this decision, these parties will lose all benefits under Section 29B and Section 29C of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, certain provisions of the Income Tax Act, 1961, and the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968.

The delisted parties from Tamil Nadu include All India Athithanar Makkal Katchi (Restored), All India Women Democratic Freedom Party, Ambedkar Peoples Movement, Anaithindiya Samuthaya Makkal Katchi, Anna MGR Jayalalitha Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Appaamma Makkal Kazhagam, India Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam, Indians Victory Party, Kamarajar Makkal Katchi, Mahabharath Mahajan Sabha, Makkal Neethi Katchi-India, Meenavar Makkal Munnani, Nalvazhikkazhagam, National Organisation Congress, Nationalist Charity Congress, New Life People’s Party, and Pasumpon Makkal Kazhagam.

The party Dravida Peravai from Puducherry has also been removed. In June, the ECI had issued notices to 24 registered but unrecognised parties in Tamil Nadu for not contesting any election, asking them to explain why they should not be removed.
