Synopsis: On 24 October, DVAC officials in Kanniyakumari caught Police Inspector Anbu Prakash, 58, accepting a Rs 1.15 lakh bribe from history-sheeter Rajan to dismiss a case. A sting operation led by ADSP Miklin Escol confirmed the act with a phenolphthalein test. Prakash was arrested, remanded until 7 September, and hospitalised. Probe continues.

The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) officials in Kanniyakumari district on 24 October, Friday, caught Nesamony Nagar Circle Police Inspector Anbu Prakash, 58, red-handed accepting a Rs 1.15 lakh lakh bribe at his residence from a notorious criminal to dismiss a case.

The complainant, Rajan, alias Chanthai Rajan, a 47-year-old ‘A plus’ history-sheeter from Nagercoil, reported to DVAC that Prakash demanded the sum to quash a case logged against him at Asaripallam Police Station earlier this year, citing a ‘mistake of fact’.

Following Rajan’s complaint, DVAC arranged a sting operation targeting the alleged Rs 1.15 lakh demand, reported The New Indian Express.

On Friday night, Inspector Prakash reiterated his demand and accepted the bribe at his home in the Layam area near Nagercoil. DVAC officers, led by Additional Deputy Superintendent of Police Miklin Escol, apprehended him in the act.

A phenolphthalein test conducted on Prakash’s left hand at his residence’s portico confirmed the handling of the marked notes, and the full bribe amount was recovered intact.

Prakash was arrested and brought before Nagercoil Judicial Magistrate-II early Saturday, where he was remanded to judicial custody until 7 September.

Due to health concerns, he was admitted to Kanniyakumari Government Medical College Hospital. Investigations are ongoing to explore further details of the case.
