Sathya

In a tragic incident, a 20-year-old college student named Sathya was killed on Thursday, 13 October, when she was pushed in front of a moving train at the St Thomas Mount local railway station in Chennai by a 30-year-old man named D Satish, who was allegedly stalking her for several months.

Just hours after her death, her father Manickam died of a suspected cardiac arrest. The police said that even though he was rushed to the hospital, Manickam died in the early hours of Friday.

While some reports suggested that the father died by suicide, police officials said the cause of his death would become clear only after the post-mortem examination.

Stalker known to the victim

The police said Satish was known to Sathya and her family members for a long time.

According to police officials, the families of both Sathya and Satish lived in the same police quarters area. Sathya’s mother M Ramalakshmi served as a head constable at the Adambakkam Police Station. Satish’s father Dayalan is a retired as Special Sub-Inspector (SSI).

Police sources told South First that Satish was in a one-sided relationship with Sathya for a year or so. He had been troubling the second-year college student for several months.

On Thursday, Satish followed Sathya to the St Thomas Mount railway station where they are said to have had a serious argument.

Satish pushed her onto the tracks in front of a moving train. She died on the spot.

Even though Satish fled the scene, cops nabbed him from Old Mahabalipuram Road near Chennai in the early hours of Friday.

A history of hostilities

The police suspect that the trigger for the incident was the fact that Sathya’s parents had fixed her marriage with someone else.

In May this year, Satish is said to have argued with Sathya and pulled her hair outside the private college near West Mambalam where she was studying.

A senior police official told South First that a First Information Report (FIR) was registered following the incident, and Satish was arrested in connection with that case. The complainant in the case was Sathya’s mother Ramalakshmi.

A few days later, she filed another complaint at the St Thomas Mount Police Station over the same incident, since both families lived in the area, and she allegedly wanted Satish to be warned.

Satish and his family members were summoned to the police station, where he was given a strict warning by the cops.

The aforementioned police official said Sathya’s parents had given the cops a written letter stating that they did not wish to pursue further action, and were satisfied with the warning given to him.

Chilling reminder

For the people of Tamil Nadu, especially for residents of Chennai, the incident was a chilling reminder of similar such cases reported over the years.

In September 2021, a 20-year-old college student named Shwetha was stabbed at the Tambaram Railway Station by a man named Ramachandran. They had known each other for a few years.

Even though he tried to slit his own throat after killing Shwetha, the locals got a hold of him and handed him over to the police.

In June 2016, 24-year-old S Swathi was hacked to death by P Ramkumar at the Nungambakkam railway station.
