The double-engine government, which the BJP claims it’s proud of, had become a double-edged weapon against the people of Manipur, said DMK MP Kanimozhi while speaking participating in the debate on the no-confidence motion against the BJP-led Union government.

Supporting the no-confidence motion, Kanimozhi said that for the first time in the history of the country, the judiciary had to intervene to protect one state and the double-engine government had become a “double disaster and a double breakdown” in Manipur.

Silence of the Union government

Quoting from an article penned by former minister Yashwant Sinha, who had said democracy is not defined by the beauty of its parliament building but by the quality of its debates and the voice with which it speaks in unison on national issues, Kanimozhi invoked the new 26-party Opposition alliance when she said: “INDIA is speaking in unison on national issues and you (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) fail to come here and respond to it.”

Noting that 170 people have been killed, thousands injured, 60,000 displaced, and 3,500 homes burnt, the DMK leader said: “When the chief minister of Manipur was asked why he had not been able to control the situation for three months, he said two brothers are fighting and the government is like a father mediating between them. Isn’t this a shame with the heavy security blanket the state has?

The MP said that Manipur has the highest ratio of police personnel to civilians in India; 161 companies of central forces, including Assam Rifles, are present in the state, and yet the government has failed the people.

She accused the Union and state governments of inaction as “houses burned, police armory was looted and people killed each other, women were being humiliated, stripped, paraded, raped, violated and killed”.

“This double engine stood hand in hand watching it all happening, saying brothers are fighting. The videos of these two women who were paraded naked and raped. It shook the conscience of the nation and the world,” Kanimozhi said.

Why no action against the police?

Mentioning the ordeal of a 21-year-old girl, whose father and brother were killed when they were trying to protect her, Kanimozhi said that when the mob caught this family, they ran to a nearby police vehicle.

“They begged them to take them in the vehicle to somewhere safe, but the policemen refused. When they got into the gypsy, they allowed the mob, the violent mob, to pull… them out of the vehicle. The policemen were watching in silence when the father was killed and the brother was killed,” the DMK MP said.

The state police, the National Commission for Women, and the State Women Commission were all silently watching, she said.

The MP also said that the affected women were asking why no action was taken against the policemen who handed them over to the violent mob.

God nor government came to aid Manipur women

“People have been mentioning Draupati from Mahabharata in this house and how she was humiliated and stripped. So these women also must have prayed to some God to come and help them. God nor the government came to help these two women,” Kanimozhi said.

“Anybody who has read the Mahabharata properly knows that it was not the perpetrators of the crime who alone were punished. The silent spectators who stood there watching were also punished.”

The DMK leader also charged that though there are hundreds of relief camps in Manipur, there is no food and water. “The people cry out in hunger and thirst. Can’t this government gives them proper shelter and food,” Kanimozhi questioned.

The Pandian Sengol

“I request the prime minister to say a word that he cares and justice will be done to them. Can’t you do this much for the people who are bleeding? We went to (Manipur) to say that INDIA stands with you. We would like to know whether the government stands with them,” Kanimozhi said.

Mentioning the Sengol, which was installed in the new Parliament, she said that BJP leaders have said that it has roots in the Chola Dynasty.

“You don’t know about the Tamil Nadu history properly. Have you heard about the Pandian Sengol? The Pandian Sengol was shattered and burned when the king failed the common people. Please stop imposing Hindi on us. Do you know the story of Kannagi? Go read (the epic poem) Silappathikaram. It has a lot of lessons to teach you all,” Kanimozhi said.

“You (BJP government) are hurting Mother India every day and making her bleed. Soon the people will teach you a lesson,” she said in conclusion.
