The DMK in Tamil Nadu on Friday, 11 April, removed state Forest Minister K Ponmudy from the post of deputy general secretary for his remarks made on a public stage, where he referenced sex workers to criticise Saivism and Vaishnavism.
Following his removal from the post, Tiruchi N Siva has been appointed as the Deputy General Secretary of the DMK.
MP and DMK’s Deputy General Secretary Kanimozhi Karunanidhi had condemned Ponmudy over remarks made during a Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam event in Villupuram.
Meanwhile, BJP Mahila Morcha National President and Coimbatore South MLA Vanathi Srinivasan strongly condemned Ponmudy for his controversial remarks.
Vanathi stated that Ponmudy’s speech, in which he allegedly compared a conversation between a sex worker and a customer to Hindu symbols of Shaivism and Vaishnavism, was “highly vulgar and deeply offensive.”
She said his words were “so disgraceful that they cannot even be repeated.”
She criticised the DMK for merely removing Ponmudy from the deputy general secretary post while allowing him to continue as Forest Minister. “This is nothing but an eyewash. If he is unfit for a party post, how is he fit to serve as a minister?” Vanathi questioned.
She demanded that Chief Minister MK Stalin immediately remove Ponmudy from the Cabinet and initiate legal action for insulting women and the Hindu faith.
“Anything less is a betrayal of Tamil Nadu’s people,” she added.
