Synopsis: The plea adds that since the final order on the Bihar case is still pending before the Supreme Court, proceeding with the voter list revision in Tamil Nadu would violate the voting rights of its citizens.
The DMK has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Tamil Nadu.
The petition was filed by DMK organising secretary RS Bharathi.
The plea states that several irregularities have been reported in the special intensive voter revision process in Bihar, and the Supreme Court has not yet delivered its final verdict in that case.
In this context, conducting a similar special voter list revision in Tamil Nadu, where elections are only a few months away, is against democratic principles.
The petition further argues that during the draft voter list publication period, major festivals such as Christmas and Pongal will occur, which could make it difficult for voters who wish to register or correct their details, potentially depriving them of their voting rights.
It adds that since the final order on the Bihar case is still pending before the Supreme Court, proceeding with the voter list revision in Tamil Nadu would violate the voting rights of its citizens.
Hence, the Election Commission should immediately suspend the voter revision exercise.
On Sunday, 2 November, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, chaired an all-party meeting at the state Secretariat to discuss the special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls, alleging that the process is being misused nationally to remove genuine voters ahead of elections.
Stalin accused the central authorities of replicating tactics used in Bihar, where voter list revisions allegedly threatened and deprived people of their voting rights.
“In Bihar, the revision of the voter list was carried out in a manner that threatened people and deprived them of their voting rights, and a similar plan is now being prepared for other states, including Tamil Nadu,” he stated.
