Distressed over re-examination, two NEET aspirants die by suicide in Tamil Nadu

Synopsis: A 20-year-old NEET aspirant from Hosur in Tamil Nadu’s Krishnagiri district and an 18-year-old aspirant from Dharmapuri died by suicide in separate incidents. Vetri Anandhan, who had appeared for the examination in May, was reportedly distressed by the announcement of a re-examination. In Dharmapuri, Roshni was scheduled to appear for the NEET examination on Sunday.

Two NEET aspirants from Tamil Nadu’s Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts died by suicide in separate incidents.

In Krishnagiri district, 20-year-old Vetri Anandhan from near Hosur allegedly died by suicide after experiencing severe mental distress over the announcement of a re-examination following complaints of irregularities and question paper leaks.

A resident of the Bagalur Housing Board area, Anandhan was the younger of two sons of Chinnasamy (51), a labourer employed at a private company in Hosur, and Utharakumari. He had been undergoing intensive coaching at a reputed NEET training centre in Namakkal with the ambition of becoming a doctor.

Family members said Anandhan had appeared for the NEET examination twice earlier but had been unable to secure the score he expected.

He had reportedly worked hard for the examination conducted in May this year and had returned home confident of securing admission to a government medical college.

However, complaints of question paper leaks and other irregularities from different parts of the country led the National Testing Agency (NTA) to announce a re-examination. The development is said to have caused him significant mental distress.

A case has been registered at the Hosur Adco Police Station.

Police said Anandhan was alone at home at the time and allegedly died by suicide. Before his death, he reportedly left behind a three-page letter addressed to his family members, writing: “Father, mother, brother… forgive me. I could not fulfil your expectations.”

Police have sent the body to the Government Headquarters Hospital in Hosur for a post-mortem examination.

Dharmapuri aspirant dies by suicide ahead of NEET examination

In a separate incident in Dharmapuri district, an 18-year-old student who was scheduled to appear for the NEET examination on Sunday died by suicide.

The deceased was identified as Roshni (18), daughter of Ramakrishnan, an employee at the Palacode Cooperative Sugar Mill. Her mother works at a private company in Kelamangalam.

Roshni had completed Class 12 two years ago and had been preparing for the NEET examination with the dream of becoming a doctor. She had been undergoing coaching at a NEET training centre in Namakkal district.

According to family members, she had recently returned to her native village and was scheduled to appear for the NEET examination at a centre in Dharmapuri on Sunday. They said she had reportedly been under distress over the past few days.

Police said that on Saturday evening, while no one was at home, Roshni allegedly died by suicide.

After receiving information, personnel from the Palacode police station rushed to the spot and sent the body to the Dharmapuri Government Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Police said they were investigating whether she had left behind any note and were probing multiple angles, including whether examination-related stress or other factors contributed to the incident.
