Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) President Joseph Vijay has sparked controversy after mentioning a newly registered case against him in his nomination filed for the Tiruchirappalli East Assembly constituency, while omitting any such details in his earlier nomination from Perambur in Chennai.
The actor-turned-politician is contesting from two constituencies — Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East — in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. However, questions have arisen over the discrepancy between the two nomination affidavits.
In his Perambur nomination filed earlier, Vijay did not disclose any pending cases. However, in his Tiruchirappalli East nomination, filed two days later, he has listed two cases against him.
The first case pertains to an alleged violation of election rules during his campaign following the filing of his nomination in Perambur. A case was registered at the Peravallur police station in Chennai, and this has now been disclosed in the Tiruchirappalli East affidavit.
The second case relates to an FIR registered based on a complaint by a Vijay fan who was allegedly assaulted by Vijay’s bouncers during a TVK conference held in Madurai.
In his Tiruchirappalli East nomination affidavit, Vijay has stated that he had not received any summons or formal communication from the police regarding the Madurai case earlier. He said he became aware of the case details only recently and therefore disclosed them in this nomination.
The inconsistency between the two affidavits has raised questions and triggered a political controversy.
