A Dalit Class 11 student was brutally attacked by three minors in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district while on his way to write his English public exam.

The incident, which occurred on the morning of Monday, 10 March, has sparked controversy.

The student, a resident of Ariyanadapuram near Srivaikuntam, was travelling by bus when three individuals from the Devar community stopped the vehicle, pulled him out, and attacked him with a sickle.

The boy’s father has alleged a caste motive behind the attack, though sources on the ground suggest it was due to a personal dispute.

The survivor sustained injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital.

The police have arrested all three accused—an ITI student, a Class 11 student, and another individual.

A case has been registered under four sections of the IPC: 294(B) (using obscene language), 506(2) (criminal intimidation), and 307 (attempted murder).

According to some reports, a dispute over a love affair triggered the attack, but the survivor’s father maintains it was caste-motivated.

Police are investigating both angles.
