Days after a man picked up by the Chennai City Police for interrogation died at home following his release, there was an unwelcome rerun of sorts in Madurai on Sunday, 16 July,
A construction worker in the Madurai district of Tamil Nadu died on Sunday hours after a police inquiry. However, the Madurai Rural Police denied any foul play in the matter.
Vedan, a construction worker hailing from Seelnayakanpatti near Elumalai in the Madurai district, died hours after the police picked him up for interrogation.
According to his relatives, Vedan went to the night show of a movie on Saturday.
Around 12.30 am on Sunday, Vedan was returning home on foot when the M Kallupatti police, who were patrolling the area, stopped him on suspicion and took him to the police station. He was let go at around 3,30 am, and he returned home and went to sleep.
In the morning, when the family members tried to wake up Vedan, they found him unresponsive.
They rushed him to the Uslimapatti Government Hospital. The doctors there declared him dead.
Following Vedan’s death, his relatives protested in front of the hospital and blocked traffic along the Usilampatti-Madurai-Theni road.
They alleged that Vedan died due to police brutality. They also demanded action against the M Kalupatti police.
Revenue Department officials and the police rushed to the spot and held talks with the relatives. Usilampatti Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) C Nallu assured them of appropriate action.
Vedan’s body was sent to Madurai Rajaji Government Hospital for postmortem.
Later the body was handed over to the relatives.
Speaking to South First, Sumathi, a relative of Vedan said that he came home in the early morning and told the family that the police had picked him up while he was returning home. “He was looking dull and the family members asked him to sleep for a while and can talk in the morning. In the morning, he was found dead”, she said.
She also said that the deceased is well known in the area and there were no criminal antecedents against him.
However, the police refuted the allegations that Vedan died due to some brutality on their part.
Madurai Superintendent of Police (SP) R Shiva Prasad told South First that there were no injuries on the body of the deceased.
“The doctor who conducted the post-mortem examination opined that the death could have occurred due to cardiac issues,” he said.
The SP also said that an inquiry was conducted with the concerned police. “There is no foul play in the issue”, he asserted.
