Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin will inaugurate the Elcot IT Park at Vilankurichi in Coimbatore on Tuesday, 5 November.

The government has decided to reserve space for startups, even as established firms have shown interest in setting up their facilities in the park.

Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu — Elcot — has set up parks in Chennai, Madurai, Tiruchirapally, Tirunelveli, Salem and Krishnagiri districts. It is planning more parks in other districts.

Why Coimbatore?

A readily available talent pool, low attrition, and lesser pay compared to Chennai, Hyderabad or Bengaluru have made Coimbatore attractive to IT firms. Additionally, IT companies are also keen on expanding their footprints to cities other than Chennai after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Coimbatore is the second largest urban agglomeration after Chennai in Tamil Nadu. Known for its textile industry, Coimbatore accounts for 80 percent of textile machines manufactured in the country.

The district contributes 25 percent of total yarn production in Tamil Nadu and houses numerous textile industries. Coimbatore — called the Manchester of South India — contributes six percent to the state GDP.

It is one of the most important tier II cities, attracting leading IT companies and technology service providers. The Coimbatore city has been witnessing significant IT/ITeS activity from the late 2000s and the early part of this decade. Additionally, the city has 57 engineering colleges.

The government has been providing subsidies to companies to promote Elcot-developed Special Economic Zones.

Connectivity

Coimbatore is connected by air, rail, and road to major cities in the country. Plans are afoot for expanding the airport to meet the growing demand. An additional terminal building, 20 aerobridges, etc. are part of the expansion plan.

The National Highways Authority of India has proposed the construction of a greenfield 182.5 km road connecting Coimbatore with Karur.

The Coimbatore-Salem industrial corridor, too, has been a major attraction for investors. A high-speed rail corridor linking Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai, too, has been proposed.
