Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Synopsis: The development came even as ED raids continued at multiple locations in Chennai and Dindigul linked to Tamil Nadu Rural Development Minister I Periyasamy over alleged irregularities in land allocation and other cases.
The Chennai police have registered a case against Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials for allegedly trespassing on the MLA hostel premises on Saturday, 16 August.
The complaint was filed by Assembly Secretary Srinivasan, following which the Triplicane police registered the case.
The development came even as ED raids continued at five locations in Chennai and Dindigul linked to Tamil Nadu Rural Development Minister I Periyasamy over alleged irregularities in land allocation and other cases.
His MLA son, IP Sentilkumar, too, is under ED probe.
Since Saturday morning, ED officials have been carrying out intensive searches at several places connected to the minister.
His residence “Roja Illam” on Greenways Road, Abhiramapuram, Chennai, were searched by ED officials, who were accompanied by CRPF personnel. Similarly, the minister’s quarters at the MLA hostel in Chepauk, too, was searched.
In Dindigul, searches are being conducted at the house of Periyasamy, his daughter Indirani’s residence, and his son Senthilkumar’s residence.
During his tenure as Housing Minister between 2006 and 2011, allegations arose that land had been illegally allotted to former police IG Jaffer Sait. Based on this, an anti-corruption case was filed, which was later transferred to the ED. Periyasamy had appeared before the ED in 2022 and gave an explanation.
Similarly, when he served as Minister between 2006 and 2010, the Dindigul District Anti-Corruption Police filed a case against him, his wife, and his sons, alleging that they had amassed assets worth ₹2.01 crore disproportionate to his known sources of income. However, in 2012, the court acquitted him in this case.
Recently, the Madras High Court overturned the earlier Dindigul District Court order that acquitted him. Following this, the current ED raids are said to be probing whether illegal money transactions were involved in this case.
However, ED sources have indicated that only after the raids are fully completed will details about seized documents and other information become clear.
The DMK responded sharply to the raids, saying the Income-Tax Department and ED have been weaponised by the BJP.
“No amount of intimidation will threaten our workers and leaders,” DMK leader and MP Kanimozhi said in Tuticorin.
