Tambaram police have arrested a project manager at an IT firm for allegedly attacking a woman with pepper spray and attempting to snatch her gold chain on a pedestrian footbridge near Tambaram Sanatorium.
The accused, identified as Kuppusamy (46) of Pammal, works as a project manager at a private IT firm on Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), police said. Financial strain resulting from online trading losses prompted the techie to attempt chain snatching
The incident happened on November 7 when the victim, 24-year-old Bhuvaneswari from Chitlapakkam, who works with a private financial firm in Tambaram, was returning home. She stopped on the pedestrian footbridge to distribute sweets bought with her first salary to elderly destitute people.
According to police, Kuppusamy approached her and sprayed pepper spray on her face before attempting to snatch her gold chain. Bhuvaneswari raised an alarm, alerting the passers-by who chased and caught the accused. He was then handed over to the Tambaram police.
During interrogation, police found that Kuppusamy was a B. Com graduate and worked as a project manager at the IT firm. He reportedly earned around ₹1 lakh per month. He had suffered losses in online trading and had to sell his house in Pammal, valued at around ₹60 lakh, to clear his debts. However, he continued to face financial liabilities, which led him to commit the offence.
A case has been registered, and Kuppusamy has been remanded to judicial custody.
