Chennai gets respite as rains pause amidst thunderstorm alert; heavy showers likely ahead

Regional Meteorological Centre issued a thunderstorm alert for TN, while a low pressure area near Andaman and Nicobar Islands looms.

Following the heavy rains that lashed Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu during the early hours of Saturday morning, 25 November, rains have taken a break since the afternoon. 

Issuing a thunderstorm warning, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai said, “Thunderstorms and lightning are likely to occur at one or two places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal area on 26 November.” 

Reducing rainfall deficiency

Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, and Ramanathapuram districts of Tamil Nadu and Karaikal area, said P Senthamarai Kannan, Scientist E, Deputy Director General of Meteorology, RMC Chennai. 

Within a span of two hours on Saturday morning, Chennai’s Taramani received 45 mm rainfall, while Meenambakkam received 26 mm and Pallikaranai received 23.9 mm, according to the data from the RMC.

This spell of rainfall has reduced the rainfall deficit in Chennai, which currently stands at 28 percent deficiency. Tamil Nadu is at a 11 percent deficiency for the season.

Rain expected over the next 2-3 days

While light and moderate rains are predicted over the next two to three days in parts of Tamil Nadu, a low pressure area near Andaman and Nicobar Islands is likely to intensify.

“A low pressure area at the South East Bay near Andaman and Nicobar Islands is likely to move towards the north-west of the Indian coast and remain stationary in the open seas for the next one to two days,” weather blogger Pradeep John told South First

“The impact of the low pressure area can be felt by north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh in the first week of December,” added John. 

Waterlogging at a few localities, including Anna Nagar 2nd Avenue, Thirumangalam Metro Station, and GP Road in Anna Salai, have been cleared after Chennaiites shared it on X.
