Synopsis: Following the inquiry, TVK’s joint general secretary CTR Nirmal Kumar told reporters that the CBI had sought CCTV footage and other supporting evidence related to the event.
A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officer on Monday, 3 November, conducted an inquiry for nearly an hour at the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) headquarters in Panaiyur, Chennai, in connection with the Karur crowd crush incident that left 41 people dead and over 100 injured on 27 September during a party outreach programme.
Following the inquiry, TVK’s joint general secretary CTR Nirmal Kumar told reporters that the CBI had sought CCTV footage and other supporting evidence related to the event.
“They have asked for general evidence, including CCTV visuals. We will submit all the requested details within three or four days,” Nirmal Kumar said.
He added that the investigators had also listed out details regarding the participants and the videos recorded at the venue.
“They have only asked for information so far. We had already furnished the same details earlier to the Special Investigation Team formed by the Tamil Nadu police. The CBI has now sought the same set of documents, and we have agreed to provide them,” he said.
Nirmal Kumar further clarified that no summons had been issued to any TVK leaders to appear in person as of now. “If we receive a summon, we are ready to appear and give an explanation,” he said.
The CBI took over the case following a Supreme Court directive.
On 31 October, a 15-member CBI team led by ASP Mahesh Kumar, SP Praveen Kumar, DSP Ramakrishnan, and Inspector Manoharan carried out a field inspection at Velusamipuram, Karur — the site of the stampede.
The team used advanced 3D digital survey technology to assess road width, crowd capacity, bus stands, and nearby streets.
The case was originally registered based on a complaint filed by Karur Town Inspector Manivannan against TVK general secretary Bussy Anand, joint secretary Nirmal Kumar, western district secretary Mathiyazhagan and others.
Meanwhile, sources said that actor-politician Vijay left his Neelankarai residence for the Pattinapakkam party office while the CBI was conducting the inquiry at the TVK headquarters.
