Seeman slams Stalin over YouTuber Duraimurugan's arrest over 'defamatory' song on Karunanidhi

The arrest of YouTuber and Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) member ‘Sattai’ Duraimurugan on Thursday, 11 July near Tenkasi in Tamil Nadu has drawn the ire of NTK chief Seeman and other Opposition leaders.

Tiruchy police team arrested ‘Sattai’ Duraimurugan, reportedly for his alleged controversial and derogatory comments against the late CM and DMK supremo M. Karunanidhi. He allegedly made those comments in the form of a song while campaigning for the NTK candidate during the recently held by-polls to the Vikravandi constituency.

Seeman challenges Stalin to arrest him

Expressing his outrage over Duraimurugan’s arrest, NTK chief Seeman asked whether the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government and former CM Karunanidhi are immune to criticism. He also challenged the MK Stalin-led government to arrest him if that was indeed the case.

“Did he (Duraimurugan) say anything worse than what I have? Why was he arrested?” he asked, charging at Stalin.

Talking about the alleged ‘derogatory’ remarks made by the YouTuber, Seeman said, “That wasn’t defamation but a song that was already there in existence for quite some time.” Questioning why the person who wrote the lyrics and sang the song wasn’t arrested, he sang the song and dared the Tamil Nadu police to arrest him too.

Criticising Stalin over people who fell sick on 10 July after drinking spurious liquor in Vikravandi, he questioned the government’s lack of action despite the recent Kallakurichi hooch tragedy. Since the TASMAC was closed due to the by-polls, several people ended up drinking illegal arrack and ended up being hospitalised.

Edappadi K Palaniswami condemns Duraimurugan’s arrest

Several Opposition party leaders including the Leader of Opposition (LoP) and AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami condemned the move to arrest the YouTuber. Taking to X to share his opinion, EPS said: “It is reprehensible that this government has arrested and jailed one of the administrators of Naam Tamilar Party, ‘Sattai’ Duraimurugan, for some comments he had made in the Vikravandi by-election campaign. I urge the DMK CM, who has the state police department in its clutch, withdraw the cases against him and release him immediately.”

YouTuber Duraimurugan’s arrest in the past

Duraimurugan, who runs a YouTube channel called ‘Sattai’, was arrested a few years ago for his remarks against CM MK Stalin. Additionally, in early 2024, NIA conducted searches at his residence for his alleged links with LTTE sympathisers.

It is important to note that, the Supreme Court had restored the bail given to the YouTuber in April 2024 for alleged derogatory remarks against MK Stalin in 2021.

While restoring the bail order, the Supreme Court had observed that everyone who makes allegations on social media cannot be put behind bars.

“If before elections, we start putting behind bars everyone who makes allegations on YouTube, imagine how many will be jailed?” a bench of justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan told senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the Tamil Nadu government, as it set aside the order canceling Duraimurugan’s bail.

The apex court had also said that the accused did not misuse his liberty by protesting and expressing his views and also rejected the request of the state government to impose a condition on ‘Sattai’ to refrain from making scandalous remarks while on bail.
