Synopsis: While an investigation is underway, Preethi’s relatives accused the police of failing to take action against her husband and his family. The deceased’s relatives staged a protest at the Tiruppur City Police Commissioner’s office, surrounded Tiruppur Police Commissioner Rajendran, demanding strict action against the accused, refusing to receive the body until the woman’s husband and his family members are arrested.
A woman identified as Preethi, a Tiruppur resident, allegedly died of suicide due to dowry harassment on Tuesday, 5 August.
According to reports, Sugandhi’s daughter, Preethi, a resident of Friends Garden in Tiruppur, was married to Satheeshwar from Veerappan Chathiram in Erode district on 15 September 2024.
During the wedding, dowry in the form of 120 sovereigns of gold, ₹25 lakh cash, and an Innova car worth ₹38 lakh was reportedly given. Later, the husband’s family allegedly came to know that Preethi’s ancestral property was to be sold for ₹50 lakh and began harassing her to get that money as well.
Due to continuous dowry harassment, Preethi left her husband’s house 10 months after marriage and returned to her maternal home. For the past month, she had been under severe mental distress. On Tuesday evening, when her mother had gone out, Preethi died by suicide at home.
Nallur police recovered her body and sent it to Tiruppur Government Medical College Hospital for post-mortem.

Tamil Nadu has recently seen two other dowry deaths in last two months.
Ridhanya from Tiruppur in Tamil Nadu married 28-year-old Kaveen Kumar on 11 April 2025. Two weeks after marriage, she returned to her parental home, unable to bear the mental and physical torture by her husband and in-laws. Her father, unaware of the depth of her pain, forced her to “adjust”.
On 29 June, just after 78 days of marriage, she left her in-laws’ home, saying she was going to the Mondipalayam temple. Hours later, her body was found in a car, frothing at the mouth. She had consumed a pesticide, it was later learnt.
Just two days after Ridhanya’s death, another young woman, 22-year-old Lokeshwari, died by suicide in Chennai’s Ponneri, reportedly due to dowry harassment by her husband and in-laws. Her family had promised five sovereigns of gold but could only provide four.
Married on 27 June, she ended her life three days later on 30 June. According to her father’s complaint lodged at the Ponneri police station, a dispute over dowry demands had taken place. Lokeshwari’s husband had allegedly insisted she ask her parents for more gold, an air conditioner, and other household items.
She tried, but took the extreme step shortly after visiting her parents’ home.
