Synopsis: PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss announced his party’s alliance with AIADMK for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections after meeting Edappadi K Palaniswami. Despite internal conflict with S Ramadoss, Anbumani confirmed seat-sharing. The alliance, also including BJP, aims to oust DMK, sparking major political buzz in Tamil Nadu.

The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), led by Anbumani Ramadoss, has announced that it will contest the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections as part of the AIADMK-led alliance.

Anbumani made the official announcement after meeting AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami at the latter’s residence today.

Meeting with Palaniswami

At around 9 am on 7 January, Anbumani, along with PMK functionaries, arrived at the residence of Leader of the Opposition and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Greenways Road in Chennai. They held discussions with Palaniswami and senior AIADMK leaders, including CV Shanmugam and Jayakumar.

Even before the meeting, political circles had indicated that the discussions were centred on an alliance. After the meeting concluded, Palaniswami and Anbumani jointly announced that PMK and AIADMK would be contesting the 2026 Assembly elections as allies.

Palaniswami said, “AIADMK–BJP alliance has already been formed. Now PMK too has come together. A few more parties will also join us too.”

“Our alliance has come together organically, in line with the aspirations of the functionaries of both parties. This is a winning alliance. Seat-sharing has already been finalised, and the details will be announced later,” he added.

Anbumani said, “We are happy to be part of the AIADMK alliance. This (alliance) has been formed to remove DMK government, which is against social justice, women, government employees, teachers, and sanitation workers.”

When questioned about the Ramadoss faction, both Palaniswami and Anbumani chose not to respond and left the venue.

Conflict clouding PMK leadership

For the past year, a bitter internal conflict has been ongoing between S Ramadoss and his son Anbumani.

While Anbumani has asserted that he is the rightful leader of the party, on the other hand, PMK’s executive committee led by S Ramadoss passed resolutions stating that all powers rest solely with him and even announced the sacking of his son from the party.

However, Anbumani has not appeared to be particularly perturbed by these developments. Earlier, Ramadoss had passed a resolution stating that he alone had the authority to hold alliance talks.

Despite this, Anbumani has now confirmed the alliance with AIADMK, a move that has triggered a solid buzz in political circles.
